Youth for Human Rights International – Addressing the Major Human Rights Issues Affecting Youth
October 28, 2005
Youth for Human Rights is a non-profit organization, established to teach human rights to youth around the globe so they become valuable advocates for tolerance and peace.
The Director of Youth for Human Rights International, educator Mary Shuttleworth, was inspired to establish this group by the following facts:
- One third of all children are not registered at birth, resulting in no official record of their existence and leaving them vulnerable to denial of health care and schooling.
- A third of the children in the world suffer from malnutrition.
- Over 100 million children of primary school age are not in school and many more receive poor quality education.
- UNICEF estimates that more than 200,000 children are enslaved by cross border smuggling in West and Central Africa alone. Of the estimated 27 million enslaved people in the world today, most are women and children.
Seeing the urgent need for human rights and the potential of a youth-oriented program in bringing about real change in this vital area, the Church of Scientology International Human Rights Office sponsors many of the events and activities of this organization.
Youth for Human Rights has just developed a teaching guide, which can be used to teach the subject of human rights to children and teens. Anyone interested in receiving copies of the guide can contact Youth for Human Rights International.
